History

St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church is one of the ten oldest Lutheran congregations in South Carolina. While we list our founding date as 1780, it is clear from historical documents that we were in existence prior to this date. The first St. Peter's congregation was formed and a log house of worship built on Eighteen Mile Creek in Lexington County. In the early 1800s the St. Peter's congregation was relocated to the Porth property, approximately one half mile from our present location. That land is being developed into a housing development, Farming Creek.

Our third house of worship was constructed just behind our current sanctuary. This church was enlarged and reconstructed in 1922 and rededicated in 1924. Construction of our current sanctuary was begun in 1950, and in August 1953 the congregation laid the cornerstone of our new church. The church was dedicated on September 6, 1953, and St. Peter’s was a single, self-supporting congregation for the first time. The congregation began building a parsonage in 1953, which now serves as church offices and conference room.

As our congregation grew, more facilities were needed, and in 1974 the educational building was built to serve better the needs of our members. Our congregation is continuing to grow because of the tremendous growth of the Lexington area. With many new housing developments surrounding our church, with Lexington School District One as the fastest growing school district in our state, with our proximity to business and post-secondary institutions in Columbia, and with Lake Murray attracting residents with its magnificent recreational facilities, the St. Peter's congregation is growing as well.

St. Peter's’ congregation approved a master plan in May 1999 to expand the current sanctuary to seat 500 and to build a fellowship hall to accommodate 500.

As St. Peter's continues to minister to its members and community, we are more committed than ever to our mission statement below.

Ministries We offer many ways to connect with others and the community at St. Peter's. We have activities, projects and missions to suit a variety of interests and abilities. We invite you to learn more about these opportunities under the Ministries tab above.
